Synopsis
Saichi 'Immortal' Sugimoto survived the Battle of 203 Hill through sheer, violent refusal to die. Now he's in Hokkaido's frozen wilderness, gold panning for money to keep a promise to his dead comrade's widow when a drunk man tells him an impossible story: a fortune in Ainu gold, the location encoded in tattoos split across 24 escaped convicts scattered across Hokkaido. He dismisses it — until he meets Asirpa, a young Ainu girl who becomes his partner and guide. Golden Kamuy (Satoru Noda) is a 314-chapter historical adventure complete in Weekly Young Jump, combining Meiji-era historical authenticity, Ainu cultural documentation, survival in brutal wilderness conditions, and an absolutely unhinged cast of tattooed criminals with enough charisma to sustain 300 chapters of rotating antagonists. It is funny, brutal, educational, and profoundly moving. The anime (Geno Studio/Brain's Base) has aired four seasons; the film GOLDEN KAMUY – NORTH GOLD – released in 2024.
