Synopsis

Neo-Tokyo, 2019. Rebuilt from the ashes of a city destroyed by a mysterious explosion that triggered World War III decades earlier, it's a city of biker gangs, anti-government terrorism, and a military holding something extraordinary and dangerous in a secret facility. Tetsuo and Kaneda are best friends and rival gang members until a collision with an escaped psychic test subject awakens in Tetsuo an ability so massive it may be uncontainable. Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo) is the foundational text of modern manga — 2,182 pages published in Young Magazine from 1982 to 1990, collected in six oversized volumes, adapted into a 1988 film that became one of animation's most internationally significant works.
